I met my husband, Sylvester, at a charity event for his nonprofit which provides mentorship for inner city youth. That evening he was teaching the boys dating etiquette. I remember saying, "He must not have a girlfriend because he is doing everything all wrong!" My friends came to the conclusion we were either going to fall madly in love or hate each other. Happy to say we have been together for 6 1/2 years.
We cook together! Sylvester and I are "foodies". I have over 40 cookbooks representing foods from countries all over the world. He usually goes for meals from Latin American countries, and I prefer Cajun/Creole or Italian. We find cooking is a great way to spend time together, and my favorite thing to share with our family. Sharing a meal is universal, and learning recipes is a great tradition we will pass on to our daughter.
Building our community is a way of life. My husband and I sit on over a dozen nonprofit boards and state/federal commissions. In 2014, together with our extended family, we created the Adrienne & Sylvester Smith Family Foundation which invests in economic development in rural America, ending domestic violence and sex trafficking. We partner with several organizations that put women and children first and help provide them with a safe place of refuge when needed.
We are avid world travelers. When I was a student, I saved my money and started traveling several years ago on mission trips for Heifer International. From that moment, I knew I wanted to meet more women and children and study their cultures. I have visited the Seven New Wonders of the World, and collectively Sylvester and I have traveled to over 30 countries. Our favorite destinations are Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
